Professor Virender Sehgal, New Delhi, India began his academic career as Reader in Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) from 1965-1969 at a time when the specialty of dermatology was virtually non-existent in India. Through dedicated, devoted, and committed endeavors, the specialty is now well-recognized, and there are professorships of dermatology in most Indian institutions.

Professor Sehgal has been responsible for establishing seven units/departments in the country, bringing each one to a post-graduate level. He has been Professor and the Head of Department in the Goa Medical College (1969-1978), University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), Safdarjung Hospital (1978-1981), and Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), where he was acting dean for several years, and associated Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital (1981-1991). He served as Director-Professor, Principal, and Medical Superintendent, Lady Harding Medical College and associated Sucheta Kriplani and Kalawati Saran Hospitals, New Delhi (1991-1993), Director-Professor and Medical Superintendent, UCMS-GTB Hospital (1993-1994).

Through his endeavors, he has developed several “schools of thought,” most notably in tropical dermatology and cutaneous tuberculosis. In addition to his scientific publication, he has written popular books in these areas. He has served as a peer reviewer for the British Journal of Dermatology, American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, International Journal of Leprosy, Journal of Dermatology (Japan), Acta Dermato-Venereologica, and Dermatology. He has been on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Dermatology and SKINmed . His ResearchGate Publications number more than 575 and with a score of 45.06.
